Took a trip back to Pennsylvania, mostly on family business.  My mom just turned 80 on May 12, we couldn’t make it on her birthday, but we celebrated on Memorial Day with a brunch at my sister’s house.  It was a wonderful day with a lot of laughter and stories, some old, some new.  But mom is several years past the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, and slipping.  I wondered how many days like this we would have again.  Mom at 80, Memorial Day, 2009The food was good, too…

My sisters and I had long discussions about what we needed to do to care for my mom.  Lots to think about…

On my wife’s side of the family, things were also changing–her mom and dad are moving away from a house they’ve lived in for 55 years, the place where she grew up, the place that our son has always know as Grandma Brubaker’s house.  They’ve been sleeping in their new, smaller house for two weeks now, we stayed in the old house, somewhat bare, but still containing much of the accumulations of stuff that made their house home.  It is likely that the house will never be occupied again, that it will be bulldozed to make way for a convenience store.  But the place is too much for them, the new place will be easier…
